The inaugural commemoration organised by the National 1916 Commemoration Committee took place in 2001 to mark the 85th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Dressed in the original uniforms of the Rising's participants the colourparty assembled outside Liberty Hall, where James Connolly had assembled his Irish Citizen Army Volunteers. From there the march proceeded to the GPO where the Proclamation was read aloud as Pearse did 85 years ago. From the GPO the colourparty then led the march to Arbour Hill Cemetery to pay tribute to the insurgents at their final resting place.
